"Just as the poor should give thanks to God and return rich love to those who assist them, so all the more should the wealthy give thanks, for through God's providence they are able to perform acts of charity and so are saved both in this age and in the age to be. For without the poor they cannot save their souls or flee the temptations of wealth."

St. Isaac of Syria

On the Feast of the Transfiguration

"On the mountain wast Thou transfigured, O Christ God, revealing Thy Glory to Thy disciples as far as they could bear it; so that when they would behold Thee crucified, they would understand that Thy suffering was voluntary and would proclaim to the world that Thou art truly the Radiance of the Father!”

On the Feast of Dormition

"The repose of the Theotokos is best explained through the Dormition icon …The Mother of God has fallen asleep and lies on her deathbed. Christ’s apostles have gathered around her, and above her stands Christ Himself holding His Mother in His arms, where she is alive and eternally united with Him. Here we see both death and what was already come to pass in this particular death: not rupture, but union; not sorrow, but joy; and most profoundly, not death, but life. ‘In giving birth, you remained a Virgin and after falling asleep you have not forsaken the world, O Theotokos … Neither the tomb nor death could hold the Mother of God, who is ever watchful in prayer, in whose intercession lies unfailing hope. For as Mother of Life she was transported to Life…’"

"The evil one cannot comprehend the joy we receive from the spiritual life; for this reason he is jealous of us, he envies us and sets traps for us, and we become grieved and fall. We must struggle, because without struggles we do not obtain virtues."

"Faith and love, which are gifts of the Holy Spirit, are such a great and powerful means that a person who has them can easily, and with joy and consolation, go the way Jesus Christ went. Besides this, the Holy Spirit gives man the power to resist the delusions of the world so that although he makes use of the earthly good, yet he uses them as a temporary visitor, without attaching his heart to them. But a man who has not got the Holy Spirit, despite all the learning and prudence, is always more or less a slave and worshiper of the world."

"Observe your thoughts, and beware of what you have in your heart and your spirit, knowing that demons put ideas into you so as to corrupt your soul by making it think of that which is not right, in order to turn your spirit from the consideration of your sins and of God."

My soul, seek the Only One ... My soul, you have no part with the earth; for you are from heaven. You are the image of God: seek your First Image. For like strives after like. Each object finds its rest in its center and element -- fish in water, fire in its upward movement, everything strives to its center. My soul, you are an immaterial spirit, immortal ... In Him alone you will find your rest."

"God is a fire that warms and kindles the heart and the inward parts. Hence, if we feel in our hearts the cold which comes from the devil - for the devil is cold - let us call on the Lord. He will come to warm our hearts with perfect love, not only for Him but also for our neighbor, and the cold of him who hates the good will flee before the heat of His countenance."

"Pleasure has two aspects: one is effected in the soul by freedom from passion, and another by passion in the body. Of these two, the one which freewill chooses has the power over the other. If a person pays attention to the senses and is drawn by pleasure in the body, he will live his life without tasting the divine joy, since the good can be overshadowed by what is inferior."

"That which delights the outer does most harm to the inner man, and the more one's fleshly substance is kept in subjection, the more purified is the reasoning soul."

"I shall speak first about control of the stomach, the opposite of gluttony, and about how to fast and what and how much to eat. I shall say nothing on my own account, but only what I have received from the Holy Fathers. They have not given us only a single rule for fasting or a single standard and measure for eating, because not everyone has the same strength, age, and even illness or delicacy of body create differences. But they have given us all a single goal: to avoid over-eating and the filling of our bellies ... A clear rule for self-control handed down by the Fathers is this: stop eating while still hungry and do not continue until you are satisfied."

"The man who pets a lion may tame it, but the man who coddles the body makes it ravenous."
St. John Climacus

"In saying that the Apostles were eyewitnesses of the substantial and living Word, the Evangelist agrees with John, who says, that the Word was made flesh, and tabernacled in us, and His glory was seen, the glory as of the Only begotten of the Father. For the Word became capable of being seen by reason of the flesh, which is visible and tangible and solid; whereas in Himself He is invisible. And John again in his Epistle says, That which was from the beginning, That which we have heard, That which we have seen with our eyes, and our hands have handled around the Word of Life, and the Life became manifest. Hearest thou not that he speaks of the Life as capable of being handled? This he does that thou mayest understand that the Son became man, and was visible in respect to the flesh, but invisible as regards His divinity."
Saint Cyril Patriarch of Alexandria, Commentary on Luke

"I do not adore matter, I adore matter's Creator who became matter for my sake, who chose to dwell in matter; who wrought my salvation through matter. I shall never stop honouring the matter which worked my salvation! I honour it, but not as God.”
St. John of Damascus

"Our Lord Jesus has many lovers of His Kingdom of heaven, but he has a few bearers of His Cross. Many desire His consolation, but few desire His tribulation. He finds many comrades in eating and drinking, but He finds few who will be with Him in His abstinence and fasting."

"Those who love our Lord Jesus purely for Himself, and not for their own profit or convenience, bless Him as heartily in temptation and tribulation and in all other adversities as they do in time of consolation."

"When our Lord came and asked Saint John the Baptist (the Forerunner) to baptize Him, the Forerunner was seized with trembling and cried, saying: “How shall the lamp illuminate the Light? How shall the servant set his hand upon the Master? O Savior, Who takest away the sin of the world, sanctify both me and the waters!”

"If we seek God, He will show Himself to us. And if we keep Him, He will remain close to us."
Saint Arsenius

If He has brought us near to Himself, when we were far off, how much more will He keep us now that we are near?"
Saint John Chrysostom

"For if you change from inhumanity to almsgiving, you have stretched forth the hand that was withered. If you withdraw from theaters and go to church, you have cured the lame foot. If you draw back your eyes from a harlot ... you have opened them when they were blind ... These are the greatest miracles."
Saint John Chrysostom

"Do not consider your riches as belonging to yourselves alone; open wide your hand to those who are in need; assist those in poverty and pain, comfort those who have fallen into extreme distress, console with those who are in sorrow or oppressed with bodily maladies and the want of necessities."
Saint Cyril of Alexandria

“What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me? (Psalm 116:12) The answer that came from our Lord is: Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” (Matthew 25:40)

"Partake, all, of the cup of faith! Enjoy all the riches of His goodness! Let no one grieve at his poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed. Let no one mourn that he has fallen again and again; for Forgiveness has risen from the grave. Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free."
Saint John Chrysostom

"O divine might of Thy power, O Savior! Thy voice has shattered the gates of hell and the jaws of death. By the same might free me from the evil passions, as Thou delivered Thomas, Thy disciple, from his doubts."

"Do not ask for love from your neighbor, for if you ask and he does not respond, you will be troubled. Instead show your love for your neighbor and you will be at rest, and so will bring your neighbor to love."
Saint Dorotheos of Gaza

“Since, therefore, the Teacher does not even judge, why do you judge? For He (our Lord Jesus Christ) came not to judge the world, but to show pity.”
Saint Cyril of Alexandria

"Feeding the hungry is a greater work than raising the dead."
St. John Chrysostom

"Lift up and stretch out your hands, not to heaven but to the poor; for if you stretch out your hands to the poor, you have reached the summit of heaven. But if you lift up your hands in prayer without sharing with the poor, it is worth nothing ... Every family should have a room where Christ is welcomed in the person of the hungry and thirsty stranger. The poor are a greater temple than the sanctuary; this alter the poor, you can raise up anywhere, on any street, and offer the liturgy at any hour."
St. John Chrysostom

"Such is the power of love: it embraces, and unites, and fastens together not only those who are present and near, and visible, but also those who are distant. And neither time, not separation in space, nor anything else of that kind, can break up and divide in pieces the affection of the soul."
St. John Chrysostom

“Speak only that which edifies your neighbor, not a word more. For to this end God gave you a mouth and a tongue, so you can give thanks to Him, and so you can build up your neighbor.”

Saint John Chrysostom

“Let the eye look on no evil thing, and it has become a sacrifice; let your tongue speak nothing filthy, and it has become an offering; let your hand do no lawless deed, and it has become a whole burnt offering … Let us then from our hands and feet and mouth and all other members, yield a first-fruit to God.”

St. John Chrysostom
